Here are a few tips to help you prevent carpenter bees from invading your Texas home this summer.
Carpenter Bee Identification
If you want to prevent carpenter bee damage, it is important to know what a carpenter bee looks like. Fortunately, it is pretty easy to identify a carpenter bee, especially if you know what a bumble bee looks like. These two bees look similar. They both have black and yellowish coloration. They are both large, fat bees. And they are both furry looking. The key difference is that carpenter bees have an entirely black abdomen.
Carpenter Bee Prevention
When carpenter bees come into your yard, they can be a benefit. They help with pollination. But it is important that they don’t find a place to live in your yard. There are two ways you can help to prevent this:
- Carpenter bees have a preference for untreated and unpainted wood, the older the wood the better. If you have an old fence, deck, or patio, you are sure to have trouble with these bees.
- Carpenter bees won’t usually tunnel into the wood of a home unless there is rotting wood, old timbers, or an entry point to exploit. Therefore, addressing these issues can help to deter these bees. Replace old or rotting wood where you are able. If you can’t replace wood, put a coat of paint on it until you can. Apply metal flashing to the end of wood timbers or over areas that are an issue, such as wooden soffits. Do an inspection of your exterior and seal any gaps, holes or cracks you find. A caulking gun is a great tool for this.
