Steps Every Texas Resident Should Take Against Ants

Ants on a dish

Every summer, without fail, ants invade homes and yards in massive numbers, ruining our gatherings, destroying our homes, and sometimes, even causing us pain. As you may know, ants in the wild slow way down, and occasionally even hide, during the colder months of winter and fall. If the temperature outside is cold, you can be sure they are more likely hiding under a rock to keep warm ,than invading your yard to find food. As we head into spring and summer, ants will be on the move again, invading homes and yards for their benefit. Here are some steps you can take to keep them away.

Prevention Steps to Keep Ants Away

There are a number of different species of ants here in Texas, and many of them are attracted to your property and home to do different things. Some ants, like carpenter ants, are attracted to your home's wood so they can carve out a nest. Other ants, such as odorous house ants, invade properties just to find sweet foods to bring back to their colonies.

Keeping many different ants in mind, here are some prevention steps you can take this spring and summer:

  • Many ants first need a way into your home to get to the food they are looking for. Search your home's exterior for any openings that ants may use to gain access inside. Seal any of these areas that you find.

  • Outside of your home, ants are drawn to areas with organic debris. Clearing a two-foot zone around your perimeter that is free of organic debris will go a long way toward keeping ants from getting close enough to invade.

  • Several ants prefer to invade homes for their dark, damp areas. If you can find a way to reduce moisture hot spots inside your home, this will go a long way to reduce ants' chances of sticking around when they do invade.

  • Reduce food sources in and around your home. If you hold any outdoor gatherings, make sure no food scraps or beverages are left outside to draw ants to your property. In the same way, inside, consider storing food inside airtight containers to keep them out of reach of ants. If ants invade your home and find no reason to stay, they are likely to simply leave the way they came in.
