Are The Ants Around My Home Dangerous?

When you visit the zoo, it is common sense to not get into enclosures with dangerous animals in them. As cute as large cats and bears are, we all know that it is not wise to try to pet them. The question is, why is this common sense not applied to ants? Maybe it is because most people view ants as no more than a nuisance. We are here to tell you otherwise. If you are curious to find out if the ants around your home are dangerous, Innovative Pest Control is here to help you find answers.

Common Ants Around Texas

Many different species of ants call Texas home. There are carpenter ants, acrobat ants, red imported fire ants, crazy ants, odorous house ants, leafcutting ants, pavement ants, and many more. What we want to find out is which of these ants are destructive and which are dangerous?

Nuisance Ants

Leafcutting ants, pavement ants, and odorous house ants are all great examples of nuisance ants. The worst you can expect from these pests is a little bit of food thievery, food contamination, or perhaps a bad smell. All in all, nuisance ants are just annoying and frustrating to deal with.

Destructive Ants

Carpenter ants are the only truly destructive ant species here in Texas. These destructive pests love to carve their nests into the wood of homes. Given enough time this behavior can lead to severe structural damage. To identify these pests look for large ⅜ to ½” long red and black ants in and around your home.

Dangerous Ants

There are three different species of dangerous ants that live here in Texas. To help you identify them, here is a brief description of each.

  • Crazy Ants: Crazy ants are ⅛” long, have long antennae, and are reddish-brown in color. What makes these pests crazy is their ability to damage cell phones and televisions. These small pests can also bite which can cause mild pain and discomfort.
  • Pharaoh Ants: Pharoah ants are very small pests at only 1/16” long. Despite their size, however, Pharoah ants are dangerous. When inside homes, these pests can pick up and transmit diseases such as salmonella, staphylococcus, and clostridium. This is usually the result of them crawling through bacteria-laden areas and then over countertops and left-out food.
  • Fire Ants: Fire ants are reddish-black 1/16” - ¼” long pests that are typically found outside around homes. What makes these pests dangerous is their bites and their stings. You heard us correctly, these ants are double trouble. As their name would suggest, stings from these pests can feel as if they are burning on your skin. The good news is that discomfort and a bit of pain are the worst you can expect unless you are allergic to their venom or are bitten multiple times.
