The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, and the wasps are buzzing, or they will be soon. If you want to enjoy pest-free time outdoors this summer, but wasps are threatening to ruin your plans, call Innovative.

When Will Wasps Start Buzzing?

If they haven’t already, it is only a matter of time before wasps are out in full force. To understand when you need to be on the lookout for wasps and wasp nests, it’s helpful to understand their life cycle.

Most wasps die off in late fall when the weather gets cooler. Only the queen survives, hibernating through the winter until the temperatures warm up again in spring. When she comes out of hibernation, the queen gets to work looking for a suitable place to build a nest. Wasps do not reuse nests from year to year, so if there is an old one around your house, it is no longer in use.

When the queen finds a place to live, she’ll start building a nest and begin laying eggs in it before it is completed. The time for the eggs to hatch and grow to maturity takes about a month, at which point the wasps can begin to help the queen in her tasks. The queen will continue to lay eggs throughout the summer, so by the end of summer, the colony can be quite sizable.

What Makes a Suitable Location to Build a Nest?

The best way to prevent wasps from being on your lawn is to make your property unattractive to them. If the queen doesn’t find a suitable location to build a nest, you’re much less likely to have a wasp problem.

What makes a suitable location for wasps to build a nest?

  • Sweet smells and bright colors. If you have an abundant flower garden, you won’t be the only one who finds it attractive.
  • Food. Outdoor garbage bins that aren’t tightly sealed signal to wasps that there is a food source nearby. Similarly, if you eat outdoors a lot or leave food outside after a BBQ, it will attract wasps.
  • Water. Like all creatures, wasps need water to survive. Standing water on your lawn or driveway, clogged gutters, or leaky spigots will all attract wasps.

Why Call Innovative When Wasps Start Buzzing

Even after taking precautions, wasps may still end up on your property. If you discover a nest, you may be tempted to remove it yourself. This is almost always a bad idea.

Sprays can be dangerous if not used correctly and they eliminate beneficial insects such as honey bees right along with the wasps. Some people swear by burning wasps nests, but combining fire with stinging insects is a recipe for disaster. So is knocking the nest down.

Instead, the safest and most effective way to eliminate wasps from your property is to call Innovative Pest Control. We are up to date on the industry standards for wasp removal, ensuring little to no chemical products are used. We also have the proper safety gear needed to handle a nest without getting stung.

Don’t take a risk when it comes to wasp removal. Take the easy and safe route and call Innovative. You’ll be glad you did!
