What Happens To Texas Termites In Winter?
Termites are seasonal pests, meaning they will only invade homes in the warmer months. For anyone living in a state with a more drastic change of weather, this seasonality provides a respite from termite activity in the winter and, sometimes, even during fall months. That is, if termites have not already found warmer conditions within the walls of the home. However, as we all know so well, the weather here in Texas has a habit of staying relatively warm, if not hot, throughout the year. This leaves us with the question, where do termites go during the winter?
Straight Into Our Homes
As long as the weather permits, termites will never stop searching for their basic needs of food, moisture, and shelter. More often than not, our homes provide all three, especially if they are made primarily of wood, a termite's favorite meal. They don't like just any wood, though. To be more specific, termites look for homes with water-damaged or rotting wood. Moisture softens the wood of your home and provides termites with the conditions they need to not only survive, but to thrive as well.
Consider checking the exterior of your home for rotting or water-damaged wood, as these factors could be inviting, or may have already invited, unwanted wood-chewing guests into your home. If you find small mud tubes crawling up your stone, brick, or cement foundation to higher wooden structures chances are your home has already been infested by termites. No matter what, it is always best to contact a professional to know for certain.
