When it comes to protecting your home equity, it can be a complicated matter. The sun dries your siding, the wind tears away at it, the cold weather causes gaps to form, and when gaps form, the water tries to get in and cause the wood to rot. But nature isn't the only threat to your investment. Wood-destroying pests, like the termite, look for ways to establish themselves inside, or next to, your home and slowly nibble away at the value of your property. Next thing you know, you're paying to demolish your back porch and construct a new one. You're paying out money you don't have to hire carpenters to fix your foundation and your walls. And, when your home is in need of repairs, those repairs take away from its value. Here are some ideas that can help you safeguard your equity from the destructive impact of termites.

Root Prevention

Keeping your home safe begins with you. Stopping termites is no exception. Before these tiny wood eaters establish a nest in your yard or, worse, inside your home, take some time to do the following:

  • Examine your yard for moist conditions. If you have obstructed gutters that are allowing water to run down your walls, leaky spigots creating pools near your foundation or areas of shade that sunlight can't get at to dry soil quickly after it rains, these must be addressed. Moist soil and wet wood are attractants for termites.

  • Swarmer termites, the ones that come onto your property to establish a nest, do not eat wood. The sole purpose of these kings and queens is to mate and find a suitable location for a nest. You can resist them from getting into your home by sealing gaps, cracks, and holes in your exterior walls and foundation. You can resist them from choosing your yard by removing any decaying wood.

Complete Prevention

The best way to fully prevent termites, and guarantee protection, is to invest in a termite control program. We say "invest" because a termite control program from a certified pest control company defers the risk of termite damage to the pest control company. That means YOU decide how much you're going to allow termites to cost. You never have to find out that termites have been eating away at your home for years, and that the damage is unrepairable. With a termite control program in place, your equity is protected.
