Summer Is Active Season For Brown Recluse Spiders
June 6, 2018
People either love spiders or they hate them. They can be quite intriguing, but for the most part, they are creepy and unpredictable pests that people don't want hanging around. Most spiders leave behind unsightly webs to be cleaned up after and some of them have a venomous bite, making them not only unpleasant but dangerous as well.
Brown recluse spiders, like many spiders, tend to invade during the summer months, posing a plethora of dangers and other problems in and around homes and businesses. They are light-brown to yellow-brown in color with a violin-shaped mark that points to their abdomen. They only have six eyes, instead of the usual eight, and have fine hairs growing from their long legs. They are usually shy, solitary spiders that retreat to dark hidden environments like storage buildings, basements, and in the back of closets. They make webs low to the ground or floor, but don't use them to catch their food because they are predatory spiders that hunt for their food. Brown recluse spiders are carnivores and primarily eat insects and other spiders.
Brown recluse spiders can be extremely dangerous if provoked. They can bite and inject a venom that can cause mild to severe reactions. This can range from a mild irritation to muscle pain, fever, and convulsions. Most of these bites can heal well on their own, but in some cases, they can become extremely painful and sometimes because of the death of cells in that area, they are unable to heal.
Sightings of brown recluse spiders are usually an indication that there are other spiders and insects on the property or in the home that they are preying on, and the more they find to eat, the more they will invade. The brown recluse population can increase rather rapidly during the mating season, which is April through early July in Texas. In that period, female brown recluse spiders can produce up to five egg-sacs that can contain up to fifty eggs each.
