Termite swarming season will be upon us before we know it. It’s important to take steps now to protect your Tyler home from a possible termite infestation. Planning ahead, before termite’s swarm, is your best chance to prevent the catastrophe that a termite infestation can cause.
Arm yourself with the knowledge of the warning signs of a termite infestation and what swarming termites look like so that you can put termite control services in place quickly to minimize damage. Having a year-round pest control plan in place that includes termite protection is a necessity when you own property in Texas.
When do termites swarm?
Termites usually swarm in early spring. Termite swarming patterns can be very predictable, generally on sunny days just after rain. You may see the swarm around a basement door, around your foundation, or basking in the sunshine on a window sill. If you miss the swarm you may later find evidence of its occurrence in the form of discarded wing piles or mud tubes around your house.
Where do swarmers come from?
When termites swarm, they are coming from a larger colony. As the colony grows too large, swarmers will take off to find a mate and establish a new colony. If you can keep your property free of an established termite colony, then you have a better chance of preventing swarmers from infesting your home.
A few things you can try are:
- Keeping your yard free of dead leaves and lawn clippings.
- Trimming back landscaping and overgrown vegetation regularly.
- Keeping wood piles dry. Store them off the ground and at least 100 feet from your home.
- Removing decaying decking, old storage sheds, and any other outbuildings that may attract pests.
