Common Termites Of Texas

termites found in texas home

The two most common termites in Texas are Formosan termites and the Subterranean termites. You may think that all termites are alike, but there are some major differences that you should be aware of.

All termites chew through wood and can cause internal damages to homes, buildings, furniture, and other items made of wood. Knowing the differences between the different types of termites is helpful in identifying, eradicating, and excluding them in the future.

Formosan and subterranean termites build their nests in the ground. Both of these species of termites eat cellulose materials like wood to supply their highly organized colonies. Termite colonies of up to 2 million members consist of workers, soldiers, and reproductives, all of which will fiercely defend their territories. Reproductive termites are also called swarmers and will look similar to flying ants when they come out looking for mates. The queens, which are typically the oldest termites in the colony, are very productive as they can lay up to 1,000 eggs in just one day.

They both create mud tubes to travel through and can remain hidden from view either underground or within the wood inside your home. Rarely will you see one, but if you do, there are probably millions more of them damaging to your home. You will find it difficult to identify their presence, locate their colonies, or eradicate every single termite.

The differences between these two types of termites lie in their preferred environments, as well as their body type, color, and how efficiently they can manage moisture in their colonies.

Formosan Termites:

  • are found more in the southern states
  • have longer bodies and shorter heads with short pinchers
  • are translucent orange in color
  • are more efficient wood eaters

Subterranean Termites:

  • are found throughout most of the United States
  • have long bodies and heads with long pinchers
  • are translucent brownish gray in color
  • are less efficient wood eaters
