When we think of a retirement home, we think of those we love living out their twilight years in safety and comfort. It is a place they can make new friends and take part in recreational activities. It is also a place where they can get immediate medical care if they need it. There are many threats that can impact seniors. Many of them can be addressed under the close, watchful eye of a trained caregiver. But, when those who care for our seniors are unaware of a problem, they are unable to help. Bed bugs can present such a problem.
Bed Bugs Feed On Your Loved Ones
When bed bugs infest a senior home, they can go unnoticed for quite awhile. One of the reasons they go unnoticed is that bites go unreported. This is because many seniors see bed bugs as dirty bugs that only dirty people have. The solution to this problem is to educate our loved ones. Explain to them that bed bugs are not attracted to filth. They are attracted to blood. These bugs can establish themselves in the cleanest of environments.
There should be no shame when bed bugs are found. These hitchhiking pests can come into a senior home on anyone, and they can choose any room to infest. They have no preference; all they need is a source of blood to feed on.
Knowing The Signs Of An Infestation
It is important to educate seniors on bed bug detection:
- When bed bugs hatch, they are pale in color, not rusty brown. In this stage, it is easy to see the black feces inside their abdomens because they are mostly transparent in this stage of development. If a newly hatched bed bug has had a blood meal, its abdomen will be bright red. These are insects, so be sure to look for the six legs, two antennae, and three body parts.
- As a bed bug develops it will become tan, and eventually rusty brown. It will also become less transparent as it develops.
- An adult bed bug will have the rusty brown coloration. If it has not fed, it will be flat and oval-shaped. If it has fed, it will be bloated and pill-shaped. Adults will have noticeable lines on the abdomen.
