Common Ways Carpenter Ants Damage Homes

Carpenter Ant

While carpenter ants have nothing on termites, they can still do quite a bit of damage if they are allowed to multiply and thrive in your Texas home. In cooler climates, these wood-destroying pests may slow down during the winter months, but not so much here in Texas where the weather stays temperate enough for carpenter ants to continue their work all year long.

What are carpenter ants?

If you are seeing large black ants in your home, you may be wondering if they are carpenter ants. And wonder you should, since these are the most destructive ants you could have roaming around your home. But they don't do damage when they are roaming through your kitchen (where you may see one or two occasionally). The damage is being done just behind your sheetrock and inside the wood of your home. This is where carpenter ants set up nests and go to work creating tunnels and burrows.

Carpenter ants don't actually eat wood, the way termites do, they only tunnel through it. But they don't just dig one tunnel. If left unchecked, they will dig tunnel after tunnel, and carve out galleries, weakening the structure of your home. They carve galleries, so they can establish nests, so they can create more ants, so they can carve more tunnels…. Well, you get the idea.

While dry wood is no problem for these ants, wet or rotting wood is even easier for carpenter ants to dig through, and if you have wet or rotting wood, then you may have bigger problems than only carpenter ants because wet wood is an attractant to many other household pests, including termites.

Carpenter Ant Prevention

If you are concerned about these large black ants getting into your home, consider using a little elbow grease and attacking the following projects to try to seal them, and other pests, out of your home:

  • Inspect your home and repair any water damaged areas you find. Also, seal up any gaps or cracks you find on your foundation or exterior walls.

  • Remove water sources inside and outside your home where carpenter ants, and other pests, can get a drink.

  • Make sure all of your gutters are clear and in good repair so that no further water damage can be done to the outside of your home.

  • Enlist the help of a pest control company.
